Well, the author is somewhat trying to garner sympathy for the ML by showing his backstory but that obviously didn’t work. 1. Because he is… him, I think that is self-explanatory enough. 2. Though he like to act all haughty and righteous by leaving the shop but his private life is a next level of hypocrisy. Isn’t he also exploiting someone and thinks they’re beneath his dignity? He doesn’t even treat Bai Luo like a human!

Also I’m really…REALLY REALLY uncomfortable with those twee little animal chibis in the context of how…deeply dark? The subject matter of this comic is, and ESPECIALLY when we had a scene earlier in this comic where Chi Yan put Bai Luo on a leash and collar and forced him to eat out of a pet dish, and in a scene where Bai Luo is frankly being presented rather like a stubborn pet
