Okei so for those who didn’t Get it: basically! The secret mermaid place they we’re looking for was apparently found by his grandfathers crew, and in the process the crew got caught by Desharow/the Merman leader. So in order for Desharow to let the grandfather go, he had to pay a price. Which was promising his own Grandson/mc with the blue hair to Desharow. (To become his mate) So in short: Mc was promised to the merman when he was just a child, to become his mate when he got older, and so it was the grandfather who lead Mc to love mermaid research and lead them to eachother without mc knowing anything!!! Mindblowing I know😭
