I’m not going to say the writing for them is always perfect (restraint play is actually a thing that can be genuinely enjoyable for everyone involved and bottoms generally don’t need to be forcibly coerced into enjoying sex, authors take note!) but I get what the author is going for – trauma, feeling trapped, a lack of communication, a bit of a power struggle combined with a person who genuinely has evil mermaid instincts, both of them trying to be someone they aren’t, and Fan Xiao understanding the emperor WAY more than either of them are truly comfortable admitting.
