what bruno told the boss is that
“i know you saw me at the window, that’s why you deliberately chose that moment to push him down”
this part gives me complicated feelings about the boss, he never wanted to kill L, but it is true he did not dare to take risks for fear of giving up power and risking his /their lives either through changing the organisation or leaving .. he kept everything status quo, even though he now heads the mafia there, he was no better than their old boss. L feels love and gratitude towards him which made him stay despite his unhappiness with how he does things.
In the end, whether he thinks L betrayed him or not isn’t important because he actually wants L by his side always, regardless, but painfully at a crossroads , he chose to abandon L. In a way also out of love for he must know L can be happier without him, if L leaves. He refused Enrico’s demand to release L only to push him away later.
His words before pushing him about only only ever loving him is true and probably what made him decide to push L away when he saw Bruno/Bruce in the window and realizes L can he saved in this way.
At least that is what I read, he would never kill or hurt L, he honestly loves him.. but his cowardice would bind them both to an unhappy life, even after L said he’s willing to die together. Amongst so many couples and spanning many chapters, this love affair is the deepest most complex love in this whole manhwa and most heartbreaking. They could have broken free to live a simple life happily ever after but.. 😭
