In regards to reading the novel, as I happened to have this window opened and saw this as I went to close it:
1) The thing is the existence of the novel doesn’t ACTUALLY have any bearing on my personal feelings on this version of the story
2) This is also a personal thing, and I’ll admit it’s also an educated guess – when I read this, what I see is a person being worn down by everyone around him and a work that’s expecting me at this point to go “yeah Po! forgive him! he loved you so much he DIED!” and for me, that simply isn’t going to happen. Sure, he might love Yuan, but what’s relevant in this case is that he doesn’t want to have a relationship with him. This isn’t a case of someone refusing to deal with their sexuality and driving their love interest bananas. Unless the comic has taken SEVERE liberties with the plot, there really isn’t any context that’s going to make an abused person being chipped away at until they relent work for me.
I’ll also be a little vulnerable here and say that, like in the case of Zhi, my dad was a bit shit to me, but his main target was my mother. I never once begrudged her wanting nothing to do with him.
It’s either rushed beyond belief or the translation still needs further improvement. I like manhua but novels throw me for a loop. Not like manga that include everything.

Also. Despite what movies like The Parent Trap may have lead you to believe, you don’t actually have to get back together with your abusive ex just because your kid is upset you broke up.
Which that’s another thing – we know from earlier that our absolute gem of a love interest was abusing the kid – definitely physically, but it also seemed to be implying that he was possibly abusing him sexually as well.
Contrary to popular belief, kids are…not actually super forgiving about that kind of thing.
And sooooo…forget all? Just because of a flower and of a fish soup?
Sigh.
I would like to read, one day, a story about a MC that after his own tribulations, turn away from his “supposed-to-be” ML and find a new love, without a single glance behind.
